Rainbow Fresh has been selected as a KingLove.com sponsoree. Rainbow Fresh started as a Boy Band, added turntables and became a band that raps about violence perpetrated on the police, and were most recently a hairspray metal band. KingLove likes them best in their current form, as will you. Rainbow Fresh has a dedicated following from their shows in the NYC metro area. Rainbow Fresh has performed at Arlene's Grocery and the Baggot Inn in Manhattan, LoveSexy in Hoboken, NY, and clubs from the Jersey Shore to the fertile plains of Caldwell, NJ and beyond. Rainbow Fresh may just get their big break any day now - be one of the lucky ones that saw them "then."
Their first, self titled album has been released, and Rainbow Fresh anticipates another soon. Experience them live in the Northeast! Below is an interview with their guitarist/vocalist and songwriter, Rich Seiner.
Q&A:
Q: Tell us about your new CD!
A: The cd can be purchased online at www.silkcitycd.com. Hopefully, the
www.rainbowfresh.com website will be able to handle this soon, because
silkcity really represents blues artists, so we're sort of out of place there.
The first CD is great and even though it's got a lot of smooth mellow songs, it breaks out with some harder rock in parts. Like a lot of first albums it leans closer to raw than to overproduced. We're also working on an upcoming CD already (gotta move fast in this music business). It will rock more and be more energetic. But there will be songs with smooth, sexy beats. We were happy with our first disk, but we're a better band now, and I hope this comes through on our next disk. I think it will.
Q: Was it harder to find bandmates or to determine the name of your band?
A: Finding bandmates was tougher- much tougher. The name came to me courtesy of my yoga and rolfing profesional.
Q: Are you musical snobs that will only play gigs in the NYC area?
A: No way. We'll play anywhere. We hope to take a KingLove-sponsored junket to Seattle to perform for our West Coast friends. We're also looking into Asia. They've been mailing us a lot of animae stuff featuring us as superheroes, but we haven't arranged it yet.
Q: Have you reached The Zone during any of your shows?
The Zone- Yes, we've been there, but not as often as we would want.
That's the best part of playing live- when you can listen to yourself as if you were an audience member. It's like an out-of-body experience.
Q: Has your groupie quotient increased since you became KingLove sponsored?
I never thought about the connection, but I wouldn't be surprised if KingLove has had something to do with it.
Q: You're single. What are you looking for in a lady?
A: Independent thinking and original style; that's what I like. Physically, I like dark hair and dark eyes. Not too thin.
Q: When did you realize music was in your veins?
A: I heard Black Dog blasting on my neighbor's stereo when I was five. I loved it, and I knew I would play guitar someday. I still love that song.
Q: Did you get good grades in music class in junior high school? Did these proud faculty members in W. Caldwell, NJ inspire you?
I think I got either a C or a B. I had a legendary teacher named Mr. Guyet. I
realize now how cool he was. We were such asses back then. I was thrown
out of class several times. Eighth grade was a rough year, but I had fun.
Mr. Buchanan was an inspiration, for sure. He was a total jazz cat; he was
the real deal. Mrs. McBride, was she in Jr. High? She was sweet. She was
also very well-endowed from what I remember. I liked those tight sweaters
she would wear. Plus she had the afro, when it was out of style. I lost a
little respect for her, though, when I found out she was banging that tool
of a music teacher- what the hell was his name? Not Helmacy. I think he taught sax.
Q: Is it true you were in a band called Vito & The Stretchmarks?
A: Yes, next question.
Q: Is there any truth to the rumor about an acoustic album with Juan Coultrez?
A: Coultrez is too busy with his soccer clinics. I got tired of him calling me from his games during halftime and canceling sessions. We would be rehearsing, and I'd see him working on his lineup for the Caldwell-Millburn game. That really obsessed him. I think Millburn was his nemesis, and it really got to him.
Q: Versatility. It's widely known that you also have mad game on the courts. Any other musicians you know of that can slow you down when you got the rock?
A: Andy Pritikin of BeBop Johnny and Jazz X is tough inside and outside. I haven't seen him play lately, though; maybe his stuff is broke by now. Most musicians have no interest in ball. I bet that Andy Pritikin and I would totally school Flea and Chad Smith.
Q: Can Rainbow Fresh's live groove be captured on CD?
A: Absolutely! The cd is self-titled. Check out www.silkcitycd.com and scroll down the catalog 'til you find us. People are really responding to our songs.
