A Phobia for Fear of Priapism?

Q: Could it be a medical condition that causes my Johnson to be erect too often? Bryce M., (near) Alexandria, VA

My friend has nightmares about penises. Is this serious? Christine R., Walnut Creek, CA

A: We've gotten a few questions about guys and their Johnsons, or women with questions about the organ. It must be nice for many guys' favorite organ to be getting some attention.

Frequent erections are not unusual. It can be caused by just about anything. Your brain can react to something you sense (see, smell, taste or hear) that turns you on. A signal is sent down the spinal cord to your unit. It can be intentional or unintentional. Often the unintentional are by touch or motion, or could even be by having a full bladder. That full bladder sensation alerts the pelvic nerve, and is why many guys wake up with the flagpole raised.

There is a more serious condition which is rare but possible. Priapism is essentially a very, very persistent erection. Priapus was a diminutive Roman god. Priapus was generally depicted as being about six inches tall, but is always shown in statues with a huge penis. Priapism is uncommon. People with head trauma from an injury can arrive at the emergency room in a priapistic state. Young black men with sickle cell anemia can be at risk for clots in their penis. If your erection refuses to go away, please contact a physician.

Which brings us to the second question. A fear of erections. There are two official phobias we found:

Medorthophobia- Fear of an erect penis.

Ithyphallophobia- Fear of seeing, thinking about or having an erect penis.

Those both sound pretty serious, but must be somewhat rare. You may want to have your "friend" talk with a psychologist if the condition persists. Hopefully this will satisfy others' curiosity about the unit for awhile.
