Valentine's Snowboarding with Cupid
B. F. from Durham, NH wins our Valentine's Story Contest!
My new girlfriend and I had been together for almost five weeks at the end of 2000. Believe it or not, we were introduced by nosey friends playing cupid. We've been taking it slow, since we've both come out of relationships in the last year or two, and neither wanted to rush things. Also, neither of us drink Tequila anymore. Family introductions at the holidays, with heaps of pressure to measure up to past partners that the family liked, or expectations of the right one, are always fun. We're at the stage in life (nice way to say hovering well past college) where our respective families are ruthless in their quest to get grandchildren, nieces and nephews, etc.. Yes, the holidays were all about survival.
Somehow I learned to like this woman (despite her crazy family) even more. Unfortunately, after the holidays we had some horrible timing. I was traveling overseas for work for almost a month, and when I got back I missed her as she had a longtime planned trip she couldn't get out of. Our conversations by phone and e-mail were getting more and more passionate while we were apart. We were VERY ready for the next step. The conversations were incredibly honest and we could really be ourselves. This led to some wickedly funny and erotic confessions about likes and dislikes. Was it phone sex? At one point, she was ready to fly out to visit me for that coming weekend! I actually talked her out of it, being that she was working herself out of some debt and couldn't really afford it. I'm somewhere between a very practical, very nice guy and an absolute idiot. I also wasn't in a financial position to buy her a last minute ticket to Europe.
The Sunday before Valentine's Day was the day I was returning. We were both able to take Monday thru Wednesday off. We knew we wanted to do something special. Valentine's Day can be big, but how often do adults have this kind of build-up until the first time? Please excuse the pun.
We're both athletic, and I found a good mid week package at a ski resort. We had a blast talking on the way up, and arrived in the late afternoon. No big surprise, we never made it out to dinner. I'll never look at getting "settled in" the same way again. What an experience, both wild and exciting. The first shower together was wet and wonderful. After the shower we took our time in a sensual and perhaps a bit kinky way, as we continued to discover each other. Now that we were fully intimate, comfortable and starving it was time for room service. Unfortunately, room service was now closed! Luckily they gave us the number for a take-out place that delivered.
The next day we woke up early out of habit and then after some quality morning time, slept late. I later woke up to find a small note. She had written me the most amazing, touching card about our night. I would have been happy staying in all day with her. She's enticing, sweetly funny, has a spectacular body, and her lips tasted like one of those desserts that's lit on fire before they serve it to you. It was clear that we had connected in mind and body. We sure had the spirit.
We decided to venture out and enjoy some of the sunny day. We had a great afternoon of snowboarding (she skied) and headed back to our suite's hot tub. I love that tub. I love us naked in that tub. It was almost too much heat, as we were worried about passing out. We noticed the neighbors giving us looks (jealous?) when we left for dinner. It was a romantic dinner at a Mexican restaurant on the night before Valentine's Day. I bought her the rose, had the strolling guys play Volare for her with Mexican accents, and embarrassed myself by making up words in Spanish. She loved it and looked absolutely captivating in the slinky black dress she'd been waiting to show me. We had no interest in going to a bar afterwards. We picked up a bottle of wine and champagne and headed back to our hotel.
She lit a candle she'd brought and put on one of my favorite Marvin Gaye CDs. We sat on the edge of the bed, and slowly, slowly got undressed. She kissed a part of my body, I kissed a part of her body. Again and again. She spilled wine on me accidentally. OK, I realized it wasn't an accident. She told me to close my eyes, and I felt incredible tickling sensations before a truly erotic one. I'd never met the Honey Dust before. Pleased to meet you.
She played guitar, and decided to play naked for me, because I had mentioned how cool that would be. I was just kidding, but I wasn't about to stop her. Having a beautiful woman play guitar and sing to you should always be done in the buff, whenever possible. She knew massages, and taught me ways to make the aches from our snow activities go away. It was even better than the night before, and we toasted each other with some champagne at midnight on Valentine's Day. Love was grand! We'd both been burned in the past, which helped us enjoy it even more. We slept well.
The next day, our last day, I served her breakfast in bed (Even if it was just croissants, some fruit and the rest of the Champagne). It didn't matter. She gave me a heart pendant, and I gave her some import CD's from her favorite groups I had picked up in Europe. OK, she topped me on the gift, but I had set up the vacation, and she had told me not to get her anything else.
We went back out to the slopes, and enjoyed it. At least until we'd begun to talk about what would happen next. She understood the travel and time demands of my job. We both understood it wouldn't be easy on our relationship. It had been the perfect time, we were convinced we had become soulmates, connecting as well in person as we had on the phone during our time apart. We were both excited about our relationship. The day was becoming decidedly overcast.
Everything should have been perfect. But it wasn't. I was leaving in a few more weeks for almost five weeks overseas. We realized our lives couldn't be like this vacation, but also knew it would be almost impossible to go another five weeks apart. Going back to long distance calls for weeks at a time would be a move from bliss to sadness. Love can get you, even on Valentine's Day.
We were both a little stressed thinking about what would happen after I left again. I knew she had changed my life, not just for this vacation. We knew what we both wanted in life, and we knew we were both in love. I had been getting burned out by my job's travel, and had another option back in town I could pursue. I wasn't sure about it, so I didn't tell her that. I even realized part of the reason I kept the job was as an excuse to stay single and not meet the right person. I didn't want to see less of her either. She changed everything. Now this great day on the slopes featured this lady thinking ahead and getting a little sad.
She decided to go back to the room and grab her camera. I knew it was time to quickly hatch a plan. It was still Valentine's Day! I said I needed to go to the bathroom, and would meet her at the lodge when she came back. I jumped on the lift, and got to the top mountain. I had met one of the operators up there yesterday, when he was helping me fix my step-in binding that was acting quirky. Jonah said he could do me a favor (I really think that was his name, but he did have that snowboard dude accent).
When she returned, we had some tourists take a few pictures of us with that heavenly backdrop. Suddenly it was us that looked like the perfect couple you see framed at your friend's houses. She smiled wide for the pictures. After the pictures, she looked at me with a mix of glee and that ever so slight tinge of disappointment, knowing it wasn't going to be easy. She was going to miss me as much as I was going to miss her over the next few months and more.
We had time to take a couple more runs before our flight out, but she wanted to get back to the room and relax before getting ready to leave. I did too, of course. But I insisted she take another run. When we got to the top of the mountain, I waved my arms frantically. Jonah stopped the lift as planned.
She was perplexed. I said I was "just stretching." She knew something was up. She then looked over at the notice board. Temperature 34, snow base 41 inches, Happy ValentineSkiBoarday and then in huge red letters:
DEAR KITTEN
I QUIT [company initials to remain nameless]
I LOVE YOU
LETS MOVE IN TOGETHER
NIBBLES
Yes, in a mildly drunken moment we had given terrible pet names for each other. The look on her bewildered face, followed by the laughter and the tears made it the greatest Valentine's Day we could ask for. We move in with each other in the beginning of April, and the new job begins mid month. We're both entering a new chapter of our lives together. We're fools in love on April Fools. I can't wait to see what she's got planned for me. Let it be the guitar!
