Our Engagement Story

Congratulations to Lisa! She wins our Engagement Story Contest!

They met four years ago at a get together of a mutual friend. Dating each other was easy, they laughed and talked so much they seemed to have known each other forever. It seemed too good to be true, for theirs was the perfect romance. He was funny, witty and charming, not to mention cute. She was sweet, funny and loving. After a year of dating they settled in a house together and that went smooth as well. They both had reservations about moving in together, but thought it was the best next step.

Young and carefree, but together always. He got a job offer from a local radio station and she kept with her online store. Two and a half years went by with neither of them noticing, as we all know, time flies when you're having fun. They talked of getting married and having a family but they just never got around to it. "Why rush? Something this perfect wouldn’t end." they would say.

The winter came and then February. That month will always be her lucky charm. The first week of that gloriously cold month something started to change. He got home much later than usual, and once after she had grown tired of waiting and went to bed. After the third night she asked him why he was coming home so late. He told her he had to work late a few nights and one night he was helping a friend in his studio. She knew he had many friends trying to make music records, even he could sing pretty well. But she still feared the worst when he came home late two more nights in a row.

He knew she thought something was wrong, but he couldn’t help but smile to himself for keeping the surprise such a scandalous secret. The next week he came home at his usual time and she felt better but still wondered. He acted a little guilty, for that week he was the most perfect man anyone would ever know. On the first day he drew her a bubble bath and set out candles around the garden tub and washed her as if she were a baby...how marvelous it felt.

The next night he made a candle light dinner and had a bottle of Champagne to go with it. The next night he massaged her entire body with warm oil, kissed her toes, and held her all night. The next evening he showered her and the bed with rose petals and made passionate love to her all night. This continued until Valentines day.

She had begged him to stay home that day but he told her he had to go to work for a few hours but that he would be home soon. He told her to listen to his show that morning, that he had a special guest she had wanted to hear. They kissed and he went to work as she got up and showered. She turned on the radio and went to the kitchen to make some coffee. On the table sat a vase of a dozen red roses with little Hershey kisses shaped into a big heart around the base of the vase. A card close to the flowers read happy valentines day. She smiled at herself, she had long forgot his late nights...the past week she was more in love with him than ever.

On the radio she heard his voice and as she was pouring the water in the coffee pot she smiled at the sound of him, then suddenly she stopped to listen. He was telling all who would hear him, over the radio about his late nights, and how she perceived them...and what he was doing...he laughed then and she was a little frightened. He began to sing a song. A love song to her...over the radio he was singing his love to her. She nearly dropped the coffee pot as tears stung her eyes.

He sang of how they met and how his heart flew when he looked into her eyes. He sang of true love and of sacrifice. His words filled her heart and she began to cry. When the words stopped and the music died he explain to his listeners, to her what he had done on those nights. He had been writing and practicing. Then phone rang just then and she answered, tears on her face, a tremble to her voice. It was he, asking her to marry him over the radio. She sobbed and he asked again to make sure all listening could hear. She said yes, yes a thousand times and still yes. They spoke a few minutes more and before he hung up they said I love you.

She listened until he came home to the calls coming in and over the radio. So many had heard. He walked in the house and hugged her close, kissed her lips and they fell into bliss in each others arms.
