Attractiveness & Chemistry
Say what you want about Hugh Grant, but the Brit knows how to surround himself with beautiful, amorous and barely clothed women. He once again has great taste with one of Hollywood's favorite ingenues, Renee Zellweger. Rene attempts to make herself look like a frumpy Brit. RENEE GAINED TWENTY (PLUS?) POUNDS FOR THE ROLE. Yes, we put that in all caps. The press has gone on and on about Renee's big caloric intake. They should spend more time talking aobut the impressive accent she picked up. The stars are attractive - Rene, you'd need to gain a few more pounds not to be. There's also a love triangle with the tall, pale and handsome Colin Firth. A little less obvious chemistry there.
Story Line
Being single and in your thirties can be far from absolutely fabulous. If you're one of the few and the proud, you know for yourself. In this British romantic comedy, Bridget worries about dying a spinster and being found a few days later being chewed on by her pets. She drowns her sorrows in alcohol, cigarettes and her similarly wacky friends.
Bridget has to struggle with herself and her happiness - and is her sexy and morally challenged boss the answer? Does she have another admirer that she has a love/hate relationship with? Can her family be more screwed up? Can she figure out anymore ways to severely embarrass herself?
You can't help but root for Bridget as she navigates her way through. She's fighting the good fight as a "soldier of love." There are enough twists and turns to keep you interested. A primarily British cast did a good job with their own accents. But seriously, Rene did a terrific job with her accent for Bridget's part.
Bridget wants to find a nice man. Will she settle for a sexual dynamo (if that's settling)? Will she end up a spinster? It sure calls for a fun and dramatic (if not romantic) ending.
Nookie Factor
What a choice to make: tummy tucking undies or sexy panties? Bridget may just find out if she makes the right choice. Bridget gets some sack time, and makes the most of it. The love scenes are brief, with most of the time in bed shown with clever dialogue. Right! Those Brits have that great wit.
There are plenty of scenes of Bridget's butt, her not-as-slim-as-usual thighs, tiny mini-skirts, see-through tops revealing bras, and of course that staple of the movies, barely obscured breasts. "Diary" is about finding a relationship. Sex is that important bonus along the way. It's more about living in your own skin on this journey, than checking out everyone else's.

A JOLLY GOOD COUPLES FILM! You'll cheer for Bridget Jones. Great performances, romance, joy & pain, and a happy (if not hokey) ending. It's dating Anarchy in the UK!
