Moulin Rouge

The KingLove Movie Guide Review 07/01

Starring Nicole Kidman & Ewan McGregor Directed by Baz Luhrmann. Rated PG-13, 126 Minutes.

Attractiveness & Chemistry

Nicole Kidman is doing her darndest to become Hollywood's sexiest female leading lady. She's a raven haired Aussie "arse" kicking beauty. She wears the best of the Moulin Rouge outfits with aplomb. Ewan is "Obi One & Only" for many girls from the teens to the twenties. Other ladies love him for his Scottish accent alone. They're obviously both easy on the eyes. As for chemistry, they have more chemistry than your average pre-med program.

Story Line

It's the turn of the century. Not the 21st century, but the 20th. Scandalous, partying Paris in 1899. A young, poor English writer named Christian (McGregor), wants to write about the Bohemian lifestyle craze, and of all things, LOVE. He meets some cast members of a play that is in search of funding, and can change the Moulin Rouge forever if the show does go on. Who does the young writer fall madly and deeply in love with but Satine (Kidman), the "Sparkling Diamond." Satine is the star performer of the Moulin Rouge, and a courtesan (very spendy prostitute).

Can the poor writer win her affection from an evil and wealthy Duke? Can the show survive a rollercoaster of rowdy events along the way? Will the show go on!?!

Moulin Rouge celebrates the power of love, the Bohemian lifestyle, and some crazy Can-Can dancing. It shows the potent power of absinthe, the psychedelic beverage of choice, and the even more dangerous power of love and money. What is love worth? Is everyone capable of love?

You've undoubtedly heard about the music. There's plenty of it. The new "Lady Marmalade" CD seems to be everyone's favorite guilty pleasure. (The music video features four twenty something babes in revealing outfits with frequent grabbing of their private parts.) Lady Marmalade is not a large part of the film. There are dozens of songs, many with elaborate musical dance routines. The music is not your average CD or MP3's from 1899 either (a-hem). Moulin Rouge features classics from the 60's through the 90's. Christian, the writer, quotes from these rock, pop & disco standards regularly. It's clever, funny and very entertaining.

Baz Luhrmann's film will likely be unlike anything you've ever seen from Hollywood. It's very stylized and unique. It's a big, dramatic, musical spectacle!

Nookie Factor

Satine insists she's a courtesan, and is unable to fall in love. Christian doesn't want to believe it's true. He wants to win her heart in addition to her voluptuous body. Who wouldn't? With his charisma and talent, he's got a good chance of bedding this stunning beauty.

There's only very partial nudity, yet many passionate embraces and forbidden kisses. A lot more is hinted at rather than shown. The Director opted to keep a PG-13 rating, which is a mild disappointment.

Comments from the People!

"Nicole is a goddess. Maybe Tom Cruise really is gay!?!"

"I'm totally surprised. Nicole and Ewan both have great voices!"

"I didn't see the Director's earlier movie, Romeo + Juliet. I've never seen anything like this!"

"It dragged a little in spots, but was a lot of fun, and kept me very interested."

"Nicole has had some sexy roles including this one for sure... but Malice is still her best."

"It was cool to learn a little about the Moulin Rouge from that time. That is without the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" remix, I guess."

"They're easily going to win an Oscar for best costumes. Ewan looks amazing in a tux!"

"I can't believe John Leguizamo (Toulouse) played a partying dwarf. That dude is funny..."

"What a finale! You don't see that everyday."

KingLove's Overall Rating

Moulin Rouge will get you "Mou"ving! Nicole and Ewan are two fabulous talents that sparkle. Moulin Rouge is the best romantic film of the first half of 2001!
