Spider-Man
The KingLove Movie Guide Review, 05/02
Starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe & James Franco.
Directed by Sam Raimi.
Rated PG-13, 121 Minutes
Attractiveness & Chemistry
Tobey (Peter Parker / Spider-Man) and Kirsten (M.J. Watson) are a hot young pair of Hollywood actors, and they're getting even hotter. They have good chemistry on screen and off, as they were a couple going strong during and immediately following the making of the movie. Tobey is not your ordinary young Hollywood heartthrob. He's not a pretty boy. He's short, pale and spacey, although he appears to have buffed himself up a bit - Hollywood style.
Meanwhile, Kirsten has developed. You go girl! Kirsten also has some of her best assets well displayed. A few people mentioned they didn't love her teeth, but I can honestly say I didn't notice that. If it's true, I'll blame the makeup people from Interview with a Vampire (her first movie, back in the day).
Story Line
High school senior/nerd/pre-superhero is in love with the popular beauty next door. She's nice, but clearly out of his league. He's also picked on a bit by the ignorant bullies at school, one of which has the pleasure of dating M.J. All of this changes after Peter has a run-in with a genetically mutated sheep... er.. Spider. Spider senses meet Spider strength meet Spider webs.
Can he control these Spider powers? Will these new Spider powers allow him to win the girl? To fight for himself? To fight for those he loves? To fight for what's right? Will Peter learn that with power comes responsibility? Can a new and powerful villain, the Green Goblin, be stopped? Will Spider-Man become an eight legged freak?
Nookie Factor
Sure his outfit is cool, slinky and kind of kinky. Of course the ability to hang from the ceiling, shoot webs and wrap people up is too - but I digress. You've gotta remember it's PG-13, and it's based on a popular Marvel comic book for kids. Not the best Nookie source, of course, of course.
Kirsten (M.J. Watson) is in the middle of a love triangle (or lust triangle) with Tobey (Peter Parker) and his roommate, James Franco (Harry Osborn). Osborn has the looks and the big trust fund. Peter has the brains and the paralyzing fear of speaking with his dream girl. Hmmmm. You'll have to make due with some passionate kissing done in the pouring rain. Next time we hope Spidey gets to show some of his cool moves as he spins his web of love! And a Spiderwoman, perhaps?
Comments from the People!
"Tobey pulls it off - Spiderman is still the best superhero."
"A little too much of the 'ooooohhhh, poor nerd from the poor family' stuff."
"Not enough blood and guts for me. I expect more ass kicking from a superhero."
"Check out the bod on Kirsten Dunst!"
"M.J. should have known Peter was Spiderman. Even if she's not as dumb as Lois Lane."
"Highest grossing movie of all time (three day total)? It didn't seem that gross."
"If Peter Parker was in Queens, why was his uncle wearing a Yankee cap?"
"Willem Dafoe played a great villain. He didn't even need to use the mask, with his evil looks."
"Spiderman's special effects, and swinging around Manhattan were impressive, as was Kirsten...."
KingLove's Overall Rating
Spider-Man does whatever a spider can. Spins a web, any size... catches thieves (and moviegoers), just like flies. OK, so we got into the spirit of things. It's a great superhero movie, although not wall to wall (or web to web) action. Maguire plays the slightly odd nerdy guy well, as he's done before, and Dunst is certainly worth fighting for. Get your Daddy Long Legs down to see it!
