Attractiveness & Chemistry
Kenya, Africa is a stunning background for this well told story. Juliane Kohler and Merab Ninidze playing husband and wife have great chemistry even when their relationship doesn't. Merab is an attractive man and Juliane is as beautiful as ever.
This German film that tells yet another story of war torn Germany in WWII, is a well told story and not a single character lacks chemistry.
Story Line
Walter (Ninidze) arranges for his family to escape Germany to Kenya in the late 1930's. He sees the signs of what is happening to Jews in Germany even if his family is in denial about it. His wife, Jettel (Kohler) and daughter, Regina (young Lea Kurka, teen Karoline Eckertz) are the only ones to follow him there. There respective families, parents and siblings, refuse to leave and are later found to suffer the fate of so many Jews in Germany at that time.
Jettel is miserable, at first, Regina is thrilled and Walter is willing to put up with anything to survive. This combination of feelings and strategy makes for interesting interactions. The natives, including their house cook, Owuor (Sidede Onyul), are incredibly interesting to watch and enjoy as well.
Years past and many things occur and evolve for this family as the war plays itself out. None of them can help but be moved by the experience, nor can we as we are watching it.
Nookie Factor
Walter & Jettel have some extended love scenes in the movie and they are as beautfully well told stories as the rest of the movie.

KingLove's Overall Rating
Caroline Link will surely be enjoying another Oscar nomination for best foreign film next March. This is a beautifully told story with great performances. Another great story of survivors from one of the most painful chapters of our world's history.
