The Secret Lives of Dentists

The KingLove Movie Guide Review, 09/03

Starring Campbell Scott, Hope Davis, Denis Leary, Robin Tunney, Gianna Beleno
Directed by Alan Rudolph
Rated R, 105 min

Attractiveness & Chemistry

This is a drama about a marriage that is on the brink of infidelity, so the attractiveness of its characters is questionable, and the main characters are dentists... But, that said, Campbell Scott is always a babe, even if he is playing spineless and wimpy. Hope Davis, as his suspected cheating wife, is sexy especially because she seems to be rediscovering her sexuality during the movie.

Story Line

Campbell Scott fears his wife is having an affair, and their youngest daughter (they have 3) suspects something, too. Hope Davis is clearly unclear as to whether or not she is attracted to her husband anymore and he is clearly afraid of losing her, but none of this is ever said. The entire movie is about what is never said or seen.

Campbell's obsession is so strong that he begins to imagine a former patient, Denis Leary, as hanging around with him and giving him relationship advice. Campbell never talks to his wife about his fears and insecurities but will discuss anything with is imaginary confidante, Denis.

We ride an interesting roller coaster of non-communication and suspected betrayal, and it is an interesting ride.

Nookie Factor

We never get to see any nookie. Hope's lover or non-lover is never seen and though you are pretty sure she's had some kind of affair, it is never really clear how much has happened. The nookie between Campbell & Hope is a disappointing, stilted, marriage on the rocks kind of kissing.

Comments from the People!

"Dentists have strange secret lives just like everybody else!"

"This movie isn't about dentists, it's about 95% of married couples."

"Denis Leary is wasted in this film. Totally boring."

KingLove's Overall Rating

This is a good movie that is well told. It's refreshing to not have to be slapped in the face with every detail. So little is left to the imagination anymore in movies; this movie allows us to imagine and wonder.

The performances are strong and all of the characters are well developed and interesting. It is a common story, but it is told in an entertaining, enlightening way.
